Born in 1928 in New Castle, Indiana (USA)
Indiana asserts the American specificity of his work. “I’m an American sign painter” is one of his favorite self descriptions.
This same characteristic can also be applied to the iconography of his work, which has been assimilated to Pop Art, as to his means of expression which is often linked closely to the “hard-edge” (cold and geometric) current of American abstraction.
In 1966, he created LOVE for the city of Philadelphia, a sculpture that will make him famous the world over.
