Karel Appel
Born in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) in 1921, died in Zurich (Switzerland) in 2006
Painter, sculptor and poet.
As a sculptor, he used a diversity of materials (assemblage technique) and painted them in very bright colors.
He was one of the founders of the avant grade movement CoBrA in 1948 with fellow artists Corneille, Constant and Belgian poet, Dotremont.
The new art of the CoBrA group was not popular in the Netherlands but found a broad welcome in Denmark.
As a result of controversies, Appel moved to Paris in 1950. He also lived in New York and Florence.
After 1990, his popularity increased in his native country, and he became known as the most famous of the CoBrA artists, thanks in large part to director Rudy Fuchs who organized several major shows in Brussels and Amsterdam.
As a painter, he is considered an Abstract Expressionist known for his child-like style.
