Yayoi Kusama
Born in 1929 in Matsumoto (Japan)
Her first works were done in the early 1950s (drawings and watercolors) using as subjects recurrent hallucinations of her childhood, such as PEAS or WEIGHT? which later become a signature for her.
Having moved to New York in 1957, she indirectly participes in the Psychedelic movement, as well as Pop Art. Using diverse mediums (paint, photo, film and installations),
Kusama also touched closely the worlds of fashion, cinema and literature. She returned in 1973 to Tokyo, and voluntarily interned herself in a psychiatric hospital next to which her studio is installed.
